Podemos presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane returns to Mozambique after fleeing the country, facing legal accusations and a silent genocide narrative. He addresses supporters and vows to challenge the Constitutional Council's decision.
Venâncio Mondlane , the presidential candidate of the Optimistic Party for the Development of Mozambique ( Podemos ), arrived in Maputo this morning on a Qatar Airlines flight. He was accompanied by a significant police and defense force presence. Upon entering the arrivals hall of Maputo Airport, Mondlane knelt, Bible in hand, and prayed for a few minutes while being cheered on by supporters. An hour after his arrival, a Facebook Live video of the event had already been viewed over 1.
2 million times. Despite restricted access to the airport, a large crowd gathered. On Sunday, Mondlane had called on Podemos supporters to await him and wear black and white T-shirts honoring the victims of the protests. Supporters lined the streets near the airport, undeterred by the rainy weather. On his way to his vehicle, Mondlane briefly addressed the media, stating that he returned to Mozambique to dispel the narrative that he was unwilling to engage in dialogue with other leaders. He asserted that a silent genocide was occurring in the country and wanted to show solidarity with his followers. Mondlane stated his willingness to respond to legal accusations against him and reaffirmed his claim as the president elected by the Mozambican people, dismissing the Constitutional Council's outcome. He is expected to address his supporters later today, outlining the terms of the Spearhead protest phase. Yesterday, Mozambique's National Human Rights Commission announced its investigation into human rights violations related to the Christmas Day escape of over 1,000 maximum-security prisoners. The commission visited two prisons and pledged to hold perpetrators accountable. Horrific video footage of a massacre of over 30 prisoners circulating on social media further fueled public outrage and protests. The capital city experienced heavy rainfall, causing flooding, property damage, and vehicle damage
