During the sentencing, Judge Martin Picton said the group she was part of caused 'considerable fear' to those inside the Mercure hotel. At the same court, Zak Baker, 29, of no fixed address, was sentenced to two years and four months in prison by His Honour Judge Picton who said he was 'very obviously encouraging and enticing the crowd' on 3 August.

'Three people have now been handed lengthy prison sentences after admitting to their involvement in the shameful scenes we saw that day and we are continuing to identify and arrest others who also played a part. Elsewhere, a protester who threw a missile towards a police line during a city centre riot has been put behind bars.

'At times lone police on vehicle patrol found themselves targeted by offenders in the middle of the protest. Claire Anderson, defending, said Groenewald knew about the protest that day but did not go along to actively participate. 'For no justifiable reason whatsoever you and many more gathered in the city centre and participated in an orgy of mindless destruction, violence and disorder. The mayhem was widespread.'

He said: 'She knows there can only be one sentence given the nature of what we have seen. This was not politically motivated on her behalf, she is genuinely remorseful for her behaviour. 'In the course of a large-scale disorder, bottles, bricks, beer cans and other items were thrown at police officers. Several were injured.

'I understand you have not had an easy life. You were a care-leaver and now act as a carer for a former partner. You are remorseful, but you chose to take part in an organised and large-scale act of public disorder. Alex Agbamu, prosecuting, said Notley made his way to the front of the crowd and confronted police in a 'fighting pose', surging back and forth.

She told the court that Notley was a 'career burglar and thief' who in 2009 was jailed for 20 years for drug smuggling.
