MomConnect celebrates its 10th anniversary, highlighting its success in providing essential health resources and support to pregnant women and new mothers across South Africa.
MomConnect celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, marking a decade of delivering essential health resources and tailored messages to every pregnant woman and new mother in South Africa , regardless of their background or language. This flagship program of the National Department of Health utilizes mobile technology to support maternal and child health.
Through MomConnect, expectant mothers and new parents receive free maternal health information via SMS or WhatsApp and can access a text-based helpdesk for guidance or inquiries. Since its launch in 2014, almost five million mothers utilizing public antenatal services have registered on the MomConnect platform across over 95% of public health facilities. Mothers receive health and pregnancy-related information until their baby is two years old. They can use the platform to seek healthcare advice through an automated chatbot or a human-operated text-based helpdesk. Over its 10 years of operation, numerous studies have demonstrated MomConnect's positive impact on health behaviors, significantly contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of reducing the maternal mortality ratio and ending preventable deaths of newborns and children under five. The department acknowledges the contributions of all stakeholders involved in MomConnect, including partner organizations, healthcare professionals, helpdesk operators, and the mothers who have actively engaged with and benefited from the program. Gauteng MEC for Health Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, highlighted the program's vision to leverage mobile technology for enhanced maternal and child health. 'This initiative has not only empowered women but has also made remarkable strides in reducing maternal mortality and promoting healthy practices. We are committed to reaching five million more mothers, working collaboratively with our partners, healthcare professionals, and communities to ensure every mother has access to the vital support she deserves.
