Days after Mobile native Paige Madden won two Olympic medals in Paris swimming for Team USA, Mobile County Commissioners earned gold with the local swimming com
munity. Commissioners are expected to approve a $23 million bid on Monday with Persons Services Corporation to build phase one of the Mobile County Aquatics Center .Commissioner Connie Hudson, who has worked for years to get the project funded, says she hopes to break ground the first week of September.
Phase one includes a 50-meter outdoor pool and dive wells, indoor instructional pool, and 100-space parking lot. Hudson says phase two, which includes a short course indoor pool, will be built later once they can come up with an additional $8 to $10 million. "This is a huge investment for sports tourism. We have been missing out on some of the larger swim meets over the years just because of our facilities," said Danny Corte, Mobile Sports Authority Executive Director.
"They swim, and then they go back, and they get in their cars and wait till it's time for them to swim again," said Gomien.
