Best of luck to the Watford MMA fighter who is set to make his debut on the biggest stage in combat sports this weekend at UFC286

“I love to fight,” Sam Patterson smiled. “I think it’s in you or not, but I do like the pressure, I like the moment. I kind of like all eyes on me, I always have.”

“Everything’s been spot on, it always is. I’m very professional when it comes to this. I actually started camp on Boxing Day. It’s been a long 12 weeks but I’ve enjoyed every single second of it and everything’s coming together. I’m the sharpest I’ve ever been. “It’s very stressful because you could win a fight but still not get a contract,” Gooden said. “You’ve got to win and impress and it’s so difficult.

Patterson instead chooses to cycle, but he doesn’t count the ten-mile round trip as part of his training schedule, which also includes two daily sessions at the gym plus a session of his own undertaking strength and conditioning or cardio work, such as swimming or a long-distance run. Speaking last week, Patterson said: “The last three or four camps I’ve been within 0.1kg every single day coming down to the weight. I’m that dialled in to my weight and how I make the weight and, like John said, I’m not the smallest lightweight but I don’t struggle. It’s not easy but I’m a professional.

“My training partner Charlie Leary was signed to Brave, which is a middle eastern company, and then my coach David Lee managed to get me on the card and we built a good relationship with them, so I was fighting international fighters from my second fight in, travelling to different countries and getting the full experience of being a professional athlete.

Gooden said: “There’s a big weight cutting culture within Mixed Martial Arts to try and gain an advantage. But if you’re travelling across time zones and you’re jet-lagged and your body retains fluid on a plane, things of that nature, there’s a lot of stuff you’ve got to think of on top of your physical preparation and strategy.
