Mkhwanazi said police officers are not above the law and should not act in such a manner.
DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has ordered an investigation into a video showing a police officer assaulting a civilian.
The clip, which has since gone viral on social media shows a police officer manhandling a civilian who seems to pose no threat or danger to the officers.KZN top cop Mkhwanazi reacts to 'trigger-happy' label, says no officer should 'die at the hands of criminals' "Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi said that police officers are not above the law and police uniform does not give police officers any powers to disregard the law and be the law unto themselves. He said that if the man in the video had committed any crime, police should have either detained him or effected an arrest, instead of committing the crime of assault," said KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda.
Mkhwanazi said fighting crime should start within the police ranks, adding that the officer seen on the video should be taken to task.
