Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, Member of Parliament for the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court facing incitement and terrorism charges related to the July 2021 unrest. The MK Party alleges these charges are politically motivated, claiming they are part of a continuous campaign against the Zuma family.

DURBAN - The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party denounced the charges brought against its Member of Parliament, Duduzile Zuma -Sambudla, as a politically motivated maneuver. Zuma -Sambudla made her first appearance in the Durban Magistrates Court facing charges of incitement and terrorism related to the July 2021 unrest. The prosecution alleges that the accused played a role in the unrest, which resulted in widespread looting and the tragic loss of over 350 lives.

'The mere fact that they can use such senior members of the National Prosecuting Authority to sift through tweets, I mean that alone just tells you, and then four years later you want trumped-up charges that don’t even lead to an amount of bail,' stated Nhlamulo Ndhlela, the spokesperson for the MK Party. 'That’s just a clear indication that this is just a political ploy, it’s a political witch hunt against the Zuma family and like I said, there are Zuma laws and then there are everyone's laws.' State prosecutor Yuri Gangai countered that while bail would be heard under schedule 6, the state was not opposed to granting bail. This was due to the accused's cooperation with the investigations, the verification of her employment and home address, and the assessment that she posed no flight risk.
