Don Maloney will have lots of work to do as he starts his new role as president of hockey operations and interim GM of the Calgary Flames.
Maloney has been in a support role for the Flames for the past seven seasons.
On Monday, Maloney was left to explain why his longtime friend and co-worker had handed over his keys to the Saddledome. As he thanked ownership and team president John Bean for his new title, he admitted that he initially wasn’t sure they’d want him to stick around. Instead, the longtime NHL forward — he skated in The Show from 1979-91, spending the bulk of his career with the New York Rangers — will be investigating what went wrong in 2022-23. Why did a team with such sky-high expectations fail to even earn an invite to the spring dance?
“My first task from John and the ownership is to do a deep analysis of this season,” Maloney said. “Because we had a team — we have a team — that I believe should have been in the playoffs and not only make the playoffs but be a hard out in the playoffs. And we didn’t. We failed to achieve and that starts at the management level, which I was a part of. The coaching, the players, the training, the entire organization, we have to do a deep look at how we operate, how we make decisions, and fix it.
