A dispute over ownership of Mix FM, a popular Johannesburg radio station, resulted in the intervention of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa). The station is now facing confusion and uncertainty with multiple broadcasts and websites.

As it turns out the station is at the centre of an ownership dispute and Icasa arrived last week to remove its broadcast equipment. Now there are two websites and two broadcasts (one being streamed online) for Mix FM, confusing listeners. Many Johannesburg residents are familiar with Mix FM. The radio station broadcasts on 93.8FM and thrives on broadcasting music that triggers the nostalgia factor.

This has earned the station a dedicated audience, an audience that noticed when the station’s presenters suddenly went quiet last week. The radio station had been having issues with its transmitter according to long-time listeners we spoke with. However, the radio station kept broadcasting music on a loop, a sure sign that nobody was actually in the studio and so theories began popping up. That said, the various theories we saw scattered in comment sections couldn’t have guessed what was really going on. Icasa arrived at Mix FM studios in Midrand to strip the studio. This was done because a deal between Mix FM’s owner and two employees who looked to buy the station seemingly went sour. As The Citizen reports it, station manager Abi Milosevic entered into an agreement to sell the station to long-time employees Kudzayi Tiribabi and Sanny Mlotana. A deposit was paid, but Tiribabi allegedly didn’t pay the remainder to acquire the station fully. As a result Milosevic tried to retain ownership and its here that the matter went to Gauteng High Court. The court, however, threw the matter out in June stating that the matter wasn’t suitable for urgent court, the parties then agreed to arbitration except they both obtained protection orders making arbitration next to impossible. It seems that at this point Tiribabi approached Icasa which sided with them and stripped Mix FM’s studios as a result. This whole matter has not only started to destroy Mix FM’s reputation, but it’s clearly very harrowing for presenters and employees at the radio statio
