'The statistics show us and tell us that we need to be able to support and that we need to be able to extend that required service as well for our families who are searching for their boys, that are searching for their relatives'

Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller says he is “absolutely willing” to discuss with chiefs how to move forward on addressing the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous men and boys.

“We need to give them the same status as MMIWG,” said Grand Chief Cathy Merrick of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs at the special chiefs assembly April 5. According to numbers put forward by the resolution, in 2020 there were 201 Indigenous victims of homicide nationwide, with 81 per cent of those being Indigenous men.

“We were talking about some of the cross-border work and the work we have to do together to make sure… peoples are respected on both sides of an imposed border to keep them safe and alive,” he said.
