A former matric learner in South Africa is facing obstacles in obtaining her certificate due to a combination of missing documentation and outstanding school fees.
A former matric learner from a secondary school in Soshanguve, Puseletso Malobola, 21, is struggling to obtain her matric certificate. Malobola's plans to pursue a career in the hospitality industry were put on hold when her certificate allegedly went missing at her school in 2021. Her situation worsened when the school refused to release her matric results and certificate due to an outstanding debt of R650 related to the School Improvement Plan (SIP).
After much effort, Malobola managed to pay the debt, but was informed that uncollected certificates were no longer stored at the school. She was then directed back to her school, only to be told she needed to reapply for a new certificate. Malobola's story echoes that of Emmanuel Moiloa, another former matric learner from Temba township, who also faced difficulty obtaining his certificate due to an unpaid SIP fee. Education expert Hendrick Makaneta condemned the practice of withholding report cards due to unpaid fees, stating that learners have the right to access their academic records.
