Fred Khumalo | Miss SA Afrophobia: Attacks on Chidimma Adetshina betray critics' own self-loathing
It was not for the fact she is a Bachelor of Law student, nor the fact that she is a keen netball player and a highly successful model.
She bravely stepped in to explain who she was and what qualified her to have the confidence to want to be the embodiment of South African beauty, a goodwill ambassador for the country as has been the case with many memorable Miss South Africa winners of the past. in Johannesburg and has lived in this country all her life. Her father, she wrote on her platform, is a proud Nigerian, and her mother a South African who also has Mozambican ancestry.
Back then, South Africa was a painful country to live in if you were black. The laws made sure of that. In fact, black people were made to feel they were not South African. From Norma Vorster to Basetsana Kumalo from Anneline Kriel to Kerishnie Naicker the Miss SA contest showed a country slowly evolving, a country trying to define itself. There were howls of outrage from some white communities when the first black Miss SA – Jacqui Mofokeng was crowned in 1993.
@uThembisa responded to that immediately: “You guys who wishes she wins are the ones wishing her the worst honestly ... that reign would be one of the worst things that ever happened to her.” In all my life as a journalist who has covered different beats including entertainment, I cannot remember a white Miss SA being heckled in a township for her inability to speak isiXhosa or isiZulu.
