UK news: Ministers set to apologise to LGBTQ+ personnel kicked out of the Armed Forces for being gay

The government is set to apologise to thousands of LGBTQ+ people who were kicked out of the UK Armed Forces in a long-awaited report due to be published later today.

Speaking today ahead of the report’s release, Carl said: “I hope Lord Etherton’s report is a catalyst for change in which all LGBT veterans can thrive and appreciate the joy of being once again proud of their service.” In a joint statement, ex-Naval officer Craig Jones, who chairs the campaign group, and former RAF officer Caroline Paige, said in June: “Over 1150 Veterans and families stepped forward to give evidence to Lord Etherton, describing the full force of the 'gay ban'. How it devastated their lives, causing impoverishment, the loss of careers; homes; families; friends and lifelong trauma.”

Dr Mike Hill, a trustee at LGBT Foundation and who served in the Royal Navy as a Emergency Medicine doctor shortly after the ban was lifted, said he saw how the armed forces had changed since.
