Jenrick’s order to staff at an asylum centre to paint over wall art depicting cartoons and animals to welcome children 'puts Britain to shame', Labour says YvetteCooperMP says it shows the Government has 'lost any sense of common decency or humanity'
On the same visit to the Kent asylum intake centre in Dover earlier this year, the minister was said to have urged workers to take down welcome signs with colourful branding to make clear the centre was a “law enforcement environment” and “not a welcome centre”.She said: “For a Government minister to give orders about cancelling children’s paintings is astonishingly callous and shows they’ve lost any sense of common decency or humanity in the way they treat vulnerable children.
“Staff had painted cartoons and animals to provide some comfort and reassurance for lone children who had made unimaginably difficult journeys in perilous conditions.“Instead of obsessing over looking tough, the Government should come up with some workable plans to solve the crisis they have manufactured through their own mismanagement.
