South African Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa defended his trip to the Paris Olympics, stating it was for government meetings and not a 'joyride' as claimed by media reports. He revealed details of his travel expenses in a parliamentary reply, which included flights exceeding R200,000, ground transport over R400,000, and accommodation surpassing R100,000.

But McKenzie said it was a false portrayal that he went to watch the Olympics, when in fact he had several meetings for the country’s benefit.

But he's been quick to hit back at media reports about the expenditure and the impression created that he went to watch the Olympics. I attended six meetings in Paris before the start of the Olympics, i went to the athletic villa to greet our athletes, I attended opening ceremony and watch the hockey, gymnastic & sevens game, I opened Ekhaya village & watched the rest of the Olympic Games on TV. What joyride ?In another post, McKenzie said that he travelled to France to meet the ministers of other countries and came straight back to work to familiarise himself with his new portfolio.
