'Mini-surge' of COVID-19 joins flu, RSV to raise infection risk over holidays, Houston doctors say
. That’s important for people to remember as they travel and gather for the holidays amid what is currently a"mini-surge" of COVID-19, said Dr. Robert Atmar, a professor of infectious diseases at Baylor College of Medicine.
Fortunately, data shows influenza and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV, have declined since both spiked around Halloween.shows a significant decrease in the number of positive flu tests since Oct. 31. Numbers for the flu and RSV have remained fairly steady over the past month. “On the one hand, it’s gratifying that we're beyond the hump we had before,” Atmar said. “But a note of caution is still needed as people travel about for the holidays.”
The same playbook that has been in place since the start of the pandemic — wearing a face mask, avoiding large indoor gatherings and good hand hygiene — remains an effective strategy, the doctors said. The flu shot and the COVID-19 vaccine, and particularly the bivalent booster that protects against omicron and its subvariants, also offer protection.
