The 87 zama-zamas - arrested in 2021 in the North West have each been sentenced to eight years of direct imprisonment, bringing their combined sentence to 696 years.
JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy has welcomed the sentencing of 87 illegal miners to a combined prison term of more than 600 years.
The zama-zamas were part of a group that was involved in a bloody gun battle with rivals at a disused mine in the area, which left six alleged illegal miners dead.
