A team of MIT researchers discovered three of the oldest stars in the universe not in distant galaxies, but in the outskirts of the Milky Way.
Based on the research, the stars formed between 12 and 13 billion years ago, around the time when the very first galaxies were formed.Surprisingly, they weren’t observed in the far reaches of the universe by the James Webb Space Telescope. Instead, they were found in archival data and are located on the outskirts of the Milky Way .The team, which includes undergraduate students at MIT, spotted the three stars in the Milky Way ’s “halo”.
Essentially, these stars are remnants of ancient galaxies that circle the outskirts of the Milky Way. And there may be many more out there, yet to be discovered. The discovery of the new stars occurred during a class project at MIT. During the 2022 fall semester, Frebel started a new course called 8.S30 .
