The 11th Airborne is working to make all of their leaders top notch arctic soldiers by sending them to the Northern Warfare training Center.
Published: Mar. 8, 2024 at 12:05 PM AKSTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Northern Warfare Training Center provides the 11th Airborne Division the ability to move forward with fulfilling the laid out for them by the Dept. of Defense; growing the leadership of the division and the soldier’s skills.
There’s a place where that happens 180 miles east of Fairbanks in the Alaska Range. Out past Delta Junction and Ft. Greely there’s the Northern Warfare Training Center. Nestled in the Alaska Range at the Black Rapids Training Site, it’s a place where soldiers from across Alaska go to learn how to better survive and fight in the arctic environment.
Those lesson include avalanche safety, managing resources in the frozen frontier, skiing, snowshoeing, cold weather injuries and more. While at the center, soldiers were camped out in the mountains making their own water and preparing for avalanche training. The location also provides a challenging and promising platform for vehicular training focusing on the use of snowmachines and SUSV’s, two-section tracked ATVs.
Both aspects of the training are vital to successful arctic warfare according to those at the center. While we often think of the enemy as a specific target, “you have to fight the environment plus the enemy and so you have, if you will, a two front battle going on and trying to win both of them can be taxing,” said Staff Sgt. Williams.
