One hundred SA National Defence members were brought in to repair flood-ravaged classrooms at Brettonwood High School in Umbilo. They are unblocking sewer lines, erecting fences and clearing the piles of rubble washed in by the deadly rains that battered the coastal province in April. The military group forms part of 10 000 SANDF members sent to help the province in a drive called Operation Chariot.

“We have requested communities to come and lend a hand as we are deployed temporarily to help communities rebuild the place after the calamity they have experienced. We expect that after the local councillors encourage them to do so, they will begin to show support.

"Many community members in this ward have been assisting, which is great to see. However, more still needs to be done. The army arrived two weeks ago and will be in the area until the end of May."“The community and school were able to get a few shovels and a few gloves. They are unable to get more and need urgent assistance while the army is still around.

He said the department was waiting for its head of infrastructure to give the actual cost of the damages. Those who want to assist can contact Mngadi on 061 402 9328 or email [email protected]
