Milan's mayor says he's 'pissed off' at young people breaking the rules and not wearing masks in public

People sunbathe as security officers ask them to leave at the Idroscalo artificial lake, in Milan, Italy, Saturday May, 9, 2020.As Italy begins to slowly let people outside again after two months indoors, Milan's mayor is lashing out at young people who aren't wearing masks in public, as required., though the rest of the country quickly followed suit, and the entire country was shuttered by March 10.

It was the second time since Italy eased the two-month lockdown on Monday — allowing greater freedom of movement inside town and city limits and sending more than 4.5 million people back to work — that Milan city officials have castigated public behavior. The deputy mayor earlier this week warned parks would be closed if people didn't stop gathering in groups and if they didn't keep their masks on.

People walk along the popular Navigli area, in Milan, Italy, Friday, May 8, 2020. Milan’s mayor on Friday threatened to shut down the popular Navigli zone of restaurants bordering canals after seeing photographs of groups of people sitting in groups without masks.Milan is the financial heart of Italy and the seat of its hardest-hit region, which has registered more than two-thirds of Italy's coronavirus cases and half of its deaths.

Local businesses said the mayor's reaction was perhaps exaggerated — and rather than threatening to close the few businesses struggling to stay open, the focus should be on increasing patrols.
