GM Kent Hughes acquired defenceman Mike Matheson from the Penguins in the Petry trade and the 28-year-old will quickly become a leader on the Canadiens’ blue line. Matheson struggled under the weight of his new contract and the Panthers traded him to the Penguins on Sept. 24, 2020. Last season was Matheson’s best in the NHL, posting 11-20-31 totals in 74 games.. “For the contract, specifically, I don’t know if that affected things or not,” Matheson added. “I think things definitely snowballed while I was in Florida in a bad way. Obviously, didn’t turn out the way I would have hoped for, but I don’t think I’d go back and change anything because I think it was a huge learning experience and it has helped me and will continue to help me through the rest of my career.
