While Flanagan’s upcoming Netflix show The Fall of the House of Usher is adapted from numerous works by Edgar Allan Poe, this has not stopped the director slipping a nod to one of his Stephen King adaptations into the series.
However, these are not the only allusions seen in The Fall of the House of Usher’s promotional materials. The barroom conversation featured in The Fall of the House of Usher’s trailer looks very reminiscent of Doctor Sleep’s similar moment. In both scenes, the protagonist sits alone in an empty bar, only to be met with a supernatural figure who appears behind the bar to taunt them. In Doctor Sleep, the ghost of Jack Torrance appears as a bartender, while his adult son Danny sits at the bar.

Aside from being a transparent callback to a previous Mike Flanagan production, The Fall of the House of Usher's allusion toward Doctor Sleep offers an important hint for the new Netflix's TV show's story.
In Doctor Sleep, the haunted drinker is the son and the ghost is the father. In The Fall of the House of Usher, the haunted drinker is the story's father figure, with the phantom appearing before patriarch Roderick Usher. The parallels to Doctor Sleep could hint that the ghost haunting Roderick, Verna, has a familial connection to the person she is manifesting in front of, just like Jack and Danny.
