Photographer Mike Drew finds Hailstone Butte lived up to its name as he sought the special views only an Alberta rainstorm can provide.
But since the swallows were flying around anyway, I drove back to the bridge and used my long lens to try for pictures. Lemme tell ya, getting pictures of swallows in flight ain’t easy! But modern camera technology is pretty good so I managed to get a couple.
By the time I launched the drone again over the beaver ponds near the head of Stimson Creek — no swallows to bother there — the clouds to the west were obscuring the mountains. And by the time I’d taken my pictures and flown it back, a strong, cold wind was starting to blow. My cameras got soaked, the entire left side of my body — shirt, pants, even my hat — were sopping and a puddle was forming on the floor mat. Did I succeed?Rain bounces off poplar leaves in the Johnson Creek valley south of Longview, Alberta, on Tuesday, July 11, 2023.The storm was moving at a pretty good clip off to the northeast — I’m betting Longview got soaked — so after a furious 20 minutes or so, the rain began to back off. And as it did, the forest began to glow.
On the other side of the summit, it was surprisingly dry. Or, at least, less wet. But as I drove along, I could see why.Article contentIt was small stuff, pea-to-marble sized, but it must have fallen quite furiously. The road was littered with shredded leaves and the grass in the meadow was flattened. And it was cold.
