Mike Drew: Running off to spring yyc

A coyote hunts along Meinsinger Creek north of Chain Lakes Park west of Nanton, Ab., on Tuesday, March 14, 2023.Just down the road I found a young moose nibbling on willow twigs. Nothing unusual there but this one seemed a bit more nervous than moose usually are. It stood still for just a couple of minutes and then took off running through the trees. In my experience, they rarely do that. Instead, they just walk into thicker cover and wait there until I move on.

A dipper stands in the shade of a structure at the outlet of Willow Creek below Chain Lakes Park west of Nanton, Ab., on Tuesday, March 14, 2023.Once they all start blooming, it’s hard to tell one clump of willows from another but fortunately I know of one clump that gets their fuzzy flowers out into the sun well ahead of the others.

Snow cover starting to melt on the south-facing slopes of the Porcupine Hills west of Nanton, Ab., on Tuesday, March 14, 2023.It was rushing down an old creek bed, cutting its way through the snow cover and leftover ice in a copper-coloured torrent that foamed like the head on a pint of Guinness where it spilled from a culvert. The rancher I stopped to talk to seemed relieved to see it but not because he was anxious for the snow to melt.

Craters left by meltwater dripping from a bridge onto the red ice from runoff on Willow Creek in the Porcupine Hills west of Nanton, Ab., on Tuesday, March 14, 2023. The colour comes from tannins and soil minerals, not cattle leavings.I continued eastward down the valley and as I went I found more ephemeral streams along the road.

The ditch I stopped at was full of flowing runoff. It was cascading down toward a coulee and cutting its way through the snow as it flowed. Where it tumbled over old ice in the ditch the angle of the sunlight made it look like liquid honey while in other spots it was bright crimson. A piece of ice turned into a small island that looked like maple sugar.Article content
