California gulls and Canada geese on the edge of the open water at McGregor Lake east of Vulcan, Ab., on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.My hope in heading out this direction was to find even more birds and other signs of the impending spring, so I continued on farther south. The snow cover was patchy out this direction, some places completely covered, others at least partially bare.
By now, I was far enough south that I figured I might as well keep on going toward Keho Lake to see what was there so I followed the western side of the Little Bow valley southward toward Iron Springs. Snow cover diminished as I drove along. Snow melting and creating the meltwater ponds that ducks and geese love in a field near Keho Lake south of Barons, Ab., on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.Though the lake was still pretty much frozen solid, there was a lead of open water out toward the middle and it was thronged with birds.
Flocks of them were flying around, coming from the open water on the lake as well as from other directions where all I could see was snow. Mallards flew by low and fast on whistling wings, Canada geese — the vast majority of the birds on the fields — wheeled into the wind to land and add to the cacophony of their calls.Article content
