The country’s annual population growth of 2.5 per cent was the highest rate since 1952, keeping pressure on housing demand and infrastructure.

Already a subscriber?A surge of international students and temporary workers pushed net arrivals into the country to a record of 548,000 last financial year, keeping pressure on housing demand and pushing up rents and property prices.

Federal Labor had forecast the net overseas migration figure for the September quarter could exceed 150,000 arrivals. Instead, the data release showed 145,244 people arrived in the quarter, the second-highest number on record. Treasury figures in December’s mid-year budget update showed net overseas migration was due to peak in 2022-23, before declining over the course of the 2023-24 and 2024-25 financial years.

Employment Minister Tony Burke stopped short of saying the latest immigration numbers were too high, but stressed a crackdown on visa conditions and dodgy higher education providers would rein in future migration numbers. But he would not say what level of migration the Coalition would seek in government, or if the Coalition would cap international student places.“We have to wait and see what sort of mess we would have to clean up in government,” he said.
