Federal Labor had forecast the net overseas migration figure for the September quarter could exceed 150,000 arrivals. Instead, the data release showed 145,244 people arrived in the quarter, the second-highest number on record. Treasury figures in December’s mid-year budget update showed net overseas migration was due to peak in 2022-23, before declining over the course of the 2023-24 and 2024-25 financial years.
Employment Minister Tony Burke stopped short of saying the latest immigration numbers were too high, but stressed a crackdown on visa conditions and dodgy higher education providers would rein in future migration numbers. But he would not say what level of migration the Coalition would seek in government, or if the Coalition would cap international student places.“We have to wait and see what sort of mess we would have to clean up in government,” he said.
