ICYMI - Michael Taube: If you really think Harper’s endorsement of Poilievre was because he’s losing, think again
In a short video posted to Facebook and Twitter on July 25, Harper described Poilievre as a “strong minister in my government” who has been “our party’s most vocal and effective critic of the Trudeau Liberals” in recent years. “He’s been talking about the issues, especially the economic issues that matter — slow growth, debt, inflation, lack of job and housing opportunities, and the need to fix the institutions that are failing Canadian families.
Everything my old friend and boss said was perfectly sensible and reasonable. I endorsed Poilievre in the Post several months ago, and made a similar case for his talents and abilities. Others have spoken out about his candidacy in a positive fashion, too.But as quizzical minds are apt to do, a number of people mused why the PM felt compelled to do this.
Not to pick on Kent, who I’ve known for years and like very much, but let’s be serious for a moment. While I fully understand the need for political gamesmanship and scoring political points, anyone who thinks Harper’s endorsement of Poilievre was a “call for help” should think again. The fact that Harper spoke out is more of a sign that he believes Poilievre’s vision is not only best for our country, but the most similar to his own. While some previous Conservative leadership candidates have displayed occasional glimpses of Harper’s successful political strategy that led to three straight election victories, most have taken a different path.Article content
