It’s much simpler to describe it as a thing that Alberta’s political parties now have to deal with to achieve electoral success going forward.
“far right” or “hard-right,” as critics like to paint her. Rather, she’s a modern centre-right intellectual who believes Albertans are in the best position to make their own choices on everything from energy independence to gay marriage that’s free from state interference and societal gatekeepers. This would help return power to the people of Alberta, enhance personal liberties and freedoms, and should hopefully set some skeptical minds at ease.
Second, Smith has to prove that economic independence also means economic unity. Rural Albertans recognize that Ottawa’s interference in federal-provincial relations, the oil and gas industry, taxation and environmental policy has put the economy at risk — and they need to protect it at all costs. The premier should consider rebranding this long-standing strategy for the urban areas as economic unity.
Third, Smith needs to show that conservatism is a positive force for political change. Rural Albertans rejected Notley and the NDP because they would have increased the size of government and public spending, destroyed the oil and gas industry and pushed the province backwards. The urban communities didn’t seem as bothered by this.
Smith overcame the odds and a bizarre election to remain premier. If she can shift her province back to its once-natural state of Conservatism, her future — and Alberta’s future — will be very bright, indeed.
