Michael Gove was forced to defend Tories’ levelling up record to Northern leaders 🔴 Gove promised the Manchester conference he would harness the ‘spirit of Thatcherism’ to help the North of England
that overlooked some of the most deprived areas of the country in favour of more affluent areas represented by Tory MPs.
Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, and other northern mayors all attended the conference to “level up” the North, calling for telling the convention the UK was in a “national malaise” and its political system, “broken”, that had to “change or die”. Mr Gove cited the “active” government of Margaret Thatcher and her 80s transformation of the London docklands as inspiration for levelling up – the plan to narrow economic and social disparities between the North and South.
He said: “The experience of successful economic transformation demonstrates that growth is not secured by absent government but by active government. “Government created the environment, the private sector created the jobs. London Docklands today is an economic success story,” he said. “We are reforming the shape and nature of government in England itself,” he added, “redistributing power and influence within England to strengthen cities and communities outside London, with the North benefiting most of all.”
