HAVING spoken to a few Conservatives off the record, my understanding is that Sunak called the election for the 4th July because he wanted to mitigate the political damage theJudging by the Conservatives performance so far, it is hard to imagine what that would look like.
With the debate beginning on the topic of the NHS, social care and our struggling public services, listening to both of them bicker about who will win the race to the bottom in cutting taxes is beyond disheartening. Public services need investment. Urgent investment.When asked if they would use private health care, Sunak unsurprisingly said he would and Starmer said he wouldn’t.
The power of televised debates was again apparent in 2015 with the famous photograph of Natalie Bennett, Leanne Wood, andhugging at the end of the debate. Not only does it make for a better debate to have multiple viewpoints, but it enriches our democratic process to know there are other options on offer than simply Tory or Labour.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
