Mexico poised to elect first woman president as voters cast ballots
People queueing to cast their vote at a special polling station in Centro Cultural Tijuana during Mexico 's general election, where it will almost certainly select its first female President.
A victory by either woman would represent a major step for Mexico, a country known for its macho culture. The winner, set to begin a six-year term on 1 October, will face formidable challenges including addressing organised crime violence. There were long lines of voters outside polling places, even before they opened at 8AM local time , with some reports of delayed openings.
Jorge Martinez, a 35-year-old dog walker and part-time security guard, said he had never seen lines so long, as he waited to vote in the capital's wealthy Polanco neighborhood. Challenges ahead for the next president also include addressing electricity and water shortages and luring manufacturers to relocate as part of the nearshoring trend, in which companies move supply chains closer to their main markets. The election winner also will have to wrestle with what to do with Pemex, the state oil giant that has seen production decline for two decades and is drowning in debt.
