Mets' Edwin Díaz needs surgery, expected to miss season after injury at World Baseball Classic

Díaz was taken off the field in a wheelchair in Miami soon after pitching a perfect ninth inning to close out Puerto Rico's 5-2 win over the Dominicans.

New York Mets star closer Edwin Diaz is expected to miss the entire 2023 season because of a knee injury suffered at the World Baseball Classic.

Mets general manager Billy Eppler told reporters that the organization will not "update Edwin's timeline for a while," but noted that the general recovery from patellar tendon surgery takes eight months. Eppler said Diaz was "in good spirits" on Thursday ahead of the surgery, which will be performed by Dr. David Altchek.

The Puerto Rican players were jumping together in the infield when Diaz collapsed to the ground and quickly reached for his right leg. The two-time All-Star was in tears and did not put any weight on the leg before being taken off the field on a wheelchair.
