20 new townhomes will be opening gradually over the next year
The Metis Nation of Ontario Housing and Infrastructure Branch is launching a pilot project locally aimed at supporting low-income Metis households in the area.
Funded by the MNO’s Housing and Infrastructure Branch in partnership with Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services , the investments into new rental units were identified by data collected from the 2021 MNO Housing Needs Assessment. The Sault Ste. Marie pilot project will support low to moderate income households living in MNO Region 4, which according to the Housing Needs Assessment reports the highest proportion of citizens with low and moderate household incomes .
The MNO is also developing long-term homelessness solutions through the Métis Housing Stabilization Program, funded by Reaching Home, a federal government program that is part of the Canadian Homelessness Strategy. The program is designed to address the growing issue of homelessness and housing instability by providing housing loss prevention and housing stabilization services.
“This year, we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of Métis Nation of Ontario. Initiatives like this affordable housing project underscore the fundamental purpose of our government: to provide essential services to Métis communities across Ontario. In 1995, when my father and other leaders in the community founded the Historic Sault Ste. Marie Metis Council, this is why they did it, to help make life better for our community.” - Kim Powley, President of the Historic Sault Ste.
