The Meta app WhatsApp is in hot water in Nigeria where it is being fined over $200 million for alleged privacy policy breaches.
An investigation by the Nigerian consumer protection watchdog alleges that Meta has more lax private data consent policies for Nigerians than it does for users in Europe.
Another day, another huge fine for Meta, whose WhatsApp platform is in the crosshairs in Nigeria, whose government alleges after a lengthy investigation that it has violated the rights of users in the West African nation. The report details how in the European privacy policy for WhatsApp, the word “consent” is mentioned at least 10 times, but it is found only once in the Nigerian version. It also alleges that the Nigerian version did not have an entire section dedicated to their rights and consents that the European version included.
