The El Niño weather pattern will have a big part to play
As soon as the nights begin to draw in, thoughts soon turn to winter and whether we will have any snow. And even experts are weighing in as they have given an early prediction that snow could hit parts of the UK.
Previous El Niño years have resulted in colder winters in the UK. According to Professor Adam Scaife, head of long-range prediction at the Met Office, this El Niño will start mild and wet before it turns cold and dry in January, reports Birmingham Live.Professor Scaife told EuroNews : "El Niño years have a tendency to have a mild wet and westerly start to winter and a colder, drier end to winter across most of northern Europe.
Likewise, the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures at Leeds University, explained that this winter could be 'frosty' due to El Niño. They explained: "During El Niño winters... The largest effect is observed in northern Europe... where winters become drier and colder. A frosty 2023-24 winter season is likely if El Niño ramps up sufficiently by then."
