It issued a yellow warning for rain from 1pm to 11pm, covering major cities such as Birmingham, Stoke-on-Trent, and Liverpool. Meanwhile, the latest warning narrowly misses Greater Manchester.
Forecasters also warned that there could be an increased chance of power cuts as well as flooding for homes and businesses. Commuters may also experience travel disruptions, including disruptions to public transport such as trains and buses.It comes as many parts of the UK continue to experience unsettled conditions this week, with some parts previously being warned of potential thunderstorms alongside heavy rain at the start of the week.
From Sunday, May 19, the UK is expected to see a 'Saharan Plume' which could bring with it more summery conditions. Parts of England are expected to see temperatures as high as 23C. Speaking on its long-range forecast, the Met Office said: "Temperatures will be generally around or just a little above average. With winds tending to be light, it will feel warm in sunnier areas. As we head further into the following week, confidence lowers into the following week. On balance, a continuation of the showers in the south seems most likely, with the north continuing to see the best of any drier weather. Temperatures will probably remain a little above average.
