BREAKING: The head of London’s Metropolitan Police, Sir Mark Rowley, has defended the force arresting six anti-monarchists protesting the coronation of King Charles.

on Saturday, with 52 brought in amid ‘concerns’ they would disrupt the coronation.

Most were arrests for offences including public order offences, breach of the peace and conspiracy to cause a public nuisance. Ahead of the ceremony, the police said it would have next to no tolerance for protests and would use new legislation to crack down on ‘disruption’. Most of the republican campaigners had congregated in Trafalgar Square next to the bronze statue of King Charles I, who was beheaded in 1649, in the morning.‘It was not our intention to prevent protest,’ the Met tweeted yesterday after arresting the protesters.

‘It is very clear a number of protests took place across the footprint both before, during and after the event with no police intervention. Any suggestion all protest was prohibited is not correct.’
