Vincent Coggins, 58, was head of the high-ranking crime gang whose 'stash house' was targeted by a group posing as delivery drivers.
Members of a drugs gang who plotted revenge on men they mistakenly believed had stolen their £1 million cocaine stash have been convicted after their plan was discovered in encrypted messages.
Coggins then used encrypted messaging service Encrochat - which had been intercepted by international law enforcement in April 2020 - to express a desire to kill those responsible for the robbery. Police, who were monitoring Encrochat messages, became aware of threats towards the men wrongly identified as the robbers by the Coggins organised crime group. But, as officers guarded those under threat, the gang still discussed revenge over messages.
In a legal argument seen as a test case for other Encrochat trials, their lawyers claimed the evidence was inadmissible, but their attempt was eventually dismissed by the court.
