Thomas Belmar appeared before Liverpool Crown Court today to be sentenced
A Merseyrail worker left a young woman feeling "isolated and ashamed" after he sexually assaulted her whilst she slept.
The incident happened following a house party at an address in South Liverpool. Prosecuting, Mr Lee Bonner, said the victim went for a lie down at around midnight. But shortly before 1am, she woke up to "someone touching her vagina". The court heard how initially, the young woman thought it was a "dream" but police were soon informed.
The court heard how Belmar had "no reason to be in the room" and the victim was "upset and shaken". In a victim personal statement, read out to the court, the woman said: "Over the past 15 months there hasn't been a day where I felt safe."The court heard how places that once felt safe have been "taken away" and the victim has "avoided meeting with friends and days out".
Defence Counsel Mr Peter White said: "He is at a loss to any way he can explain his actions on this occasion. He can only apologise."
