Men’s sevens rugby team hopes Vancouver crowd provides boost up the standings

The Canadian men hope playing before a hometown crowd at this weekend’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series event can help pull them back from the abyss.

“We know where we’re at right now in the standings,” centre/wing Josiah Morra said during a practice this week. “We know what we’re capable of. Having the crowd and our home turf, it’s going to be a huge impact for us.” The men opened the season finishing 10th at the Hong Kong Sevens, then experienced a string of disappointing results before placing 11th at last weekend’s Los Angeles Sevens.

New Zealand, winners of the last two tournaments in Sydney and L.A., lead the standings with 107 points. Canada has 19 points but is within striking distance of 11th place Uruguay, which has 29.“The point range is always such a variable,” said White. “You get a quarterfinal here and a quarterfinal there. You look at teams that were in the top five two tournaments ago, now in the middle of the pack.

The 15th-ranked core team following the 10th round in Toulouse on May 12-14 will be relegated. The teams ranked 12th, 13th and 14th at the end of Toulouse will enter a four-team relegation playoff together with the Challenger Series 2023 winners at the 11th and final round of the Series in London on May 20-21.
