“Football was my first love. I absolutely loved it,” said Boardman-Raffet. “I couldn't stop playing. I was always outside playing it.”So, how does a 13-year-old with a voracious appetite for soccer from Richmond borough in London end up on a rocky island in the Atlantic Ocean playing basketball for Memorial University?
Outside of a couple of shootarounds and some lunchtime basketball sessions in the park, the now 20-year-old didn’t have much experience with basketball. When he chose basketball over soccer, a whole new world opened for him, including eventually arriving in St. John’s. It was at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and, luckily, his Barking Abbey club was still able to play. That’s how he found the six-foot-five Boardman-Raffet, who came armed with a game that could contribute to every facet of the sport.
“Ian was really the only coach - which was a really major thing for me - that was really interested in me playing straightaway and making an impact straight away,” said Boardman-Raffet.
