Thousands of people lined streets in communities around Northeast Ohio as Memorial Day parades kicked off Monday morning, some for the first time in three years.
On the west side of Cuyahoga County, Fairview Park kicked off its parade early as temperatures hovered in the low 70s and parade goers lined Lorain Road as the parade participants marched from City Hall to the Fairview Park Cemetery where the parade concluded with speeches by the mayor and local veterans.
“It’s great to see everybody here, it’s been a couple years since we’ve been able to have a parade in conjunction with our ceremony,” said Fairview Park Mayor Patrick Cooney. “As always, the members of the Fairview Park community stepped up to honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives for all of us to enjoy the many freedoms that we have,” he added.
Silsby Road in University Heights was packed with spectators as the east side community held its first Memorial Day parade since 2019 . The parade traveled east before heading onto South Belvoir Boulevard to conclude at John Carroll University, where a brief ceremony was held honoring Memorial Day.
