Melon Mobile , a well-known mobile virtual network operator ( MVNO ) in South Africa , has launched a new company called Melon Digital to assist other brands in establishing their own MVNO s in the region. Melon Digital will be led by Calvin Collett, the founder of Melon Mobile and the previous founder of Supersonic, an internet service provider associated with MTN.

MVNOs are typically retail brands that offer branded mobile telecommunication services using the infrastructure of established mobile network operators like Cell C, MTN, Vodacom, and Telkom. Melon Digital, an MVNE (mobile virtual network enabler), joins a growing number of companies aiming to help brands launch telecom products for their customers. Other prominent MVNEs in South Africa include MVN-X and Huge Group's In a statement released on Wednesday, Collett characterized Melon Digital as a “next-generation MVNE” that has developed a “futureproof tech stack” and eliminated traditional barriers to entry, enabling businesses of all sizes to provide seamless mobile connectivity to their customers under their own brand.Collett stated, “The mobile industry has been slow to evolve, and customers have been burdened with outdated, inflexible, and expensive solutions for far too long. We built Melon Digital to address this by offering a fully digital, scalable platform that simplifies the process of launching an MVNO more than ever.” Citing research from BMIT, Melon Digital projects the market to expand from approximately 4.8 million active MVNO subscribers currently to between 11 million and 12 million by 2029. Melon Digital asserts that it is already collaborating with potential clients across various sectors, including retail and finance, who are exploring the launch of MVNO services in South Africa
