Senior social worker Malar Jayhindaran and her police officer son, Shawn Nicholas Fernandez, arrived in Scotland with few belongings and were allocated temporary accommodation in the inner-city district of Springburn.

Since arriving in Scotland from South East Asia in 2017, a mum and her son have created an extraordinary fusion between Glasgow natives and people of diverse nationalities and backgrounds who, like them, now call the city their home.

“We don’t, and never have taken racism and discrimination seriously. But when a group of young ones threw eggs at our window, Danny would go out and shout at them. Malar was an 18-year-old school leaver when she became deeply involved in community learning and development in her home country. Calling on his experience in the force, Shawn embarked on a programme of research into the challenges faced by the residents of Springburn.

Shawn went on to deliver the cyber crime workshop he’d created in association with the Central and West Integration Network at various other organisations and agencies across the city, including the West of Scotland Regional Equality Council. Glasgow Kelvin College was swift to reply – and the pair enrolled as mature students not only on the same course, but also in the same class.

“When we were in different groups during debates, Shawn wanted to argue back, and I’d say: ‘No, you must listen to me!’ College made me younger, like I was going back to high school. I was the oldest in the class. The students looked up to me. The girls always cared for me, maybe because of my age. It was respect.”
