Doctors are building tech startups to help fix a healthcare system reeling from crisis after crisis
"The UK and NHS is really pioneering this, and the UK can be really proud of it," said Dr Owain Rhys Hughes, founder of the healthtech startup Cinapsis. London-based Hughes, who has worked as an ear, nose, and throat surgeon for more than 15 years, has witnessed how complex medicine is becoming. Keeping on top of new developments can be a"full-time job" itself — and a lack of access to specialists to diagnose conditions can keep patients in an unnecessary limbo, he said.
Now, Cinapsis is used by thousands of clinicians across the country, cutting down referral times. In the Norfolk and Waveney locality, the startup has helped cut wait times for specialist advice from 50 weeks to 48 hours, Hughes said. "For too long, healthcare workers waited and thought that tech companies could solve these problems," said Proximie's Hachach-Haram."But we're facing these problems so we're best positioned to solve them."
