Diane Earl was one of Canada’s foremost paraplegic athletes, dominating in several sports.Diane Earl was born in Truro and grew up in Brookfield. In 1963, at the age of 16, a vehicle accident resulted in her becoming paraplegic. She soon after became a traffic safety spokesperson as well as a world class wheelchair athlete.
At the 1990 world championships at Saint-Étienne, France, Earl and the Canadian team won bronze. Earl became the first person in Canada who used a wheelchair for mobility to be accepted into the bachelor of physical education program at Dalhousie University. She graduated with a phys-ed degree from the University of Alberta in Edmonton in 1975, becoming the first person in Canada in a wheelchair to do so.
Earl’s life motto was we should all leave our community a better place than we found it, and to that end she tried to live a good life and give back when she could.Earl's outstanding legacy in wheelchair sports broke new ground for those who came behind her. Her amazing athletic career, despite challenges along the way, sets an example for all to try to emulate.Precious few athletes get to follow their dream to become a professional athlete.
In the fall of 2007, Fraser was invited to the Truro Jr. A Bearcats training camp by coach Shawn Evans. He led all rookies in scoring in his first season, showing he had special offensive skills. In 2008-09 Dana was awarded the Top Male Athlete – 16 to 20 years by the Truro Sports Heritage Society. He led the Bearcats in scoring with 60 points in 52 games as the team won the Bent Division title.
In his third season, he led his team in scoring and helped it compete as one of the top in the highly competitive AUS hockey conference. After making the dean’s list and being named an Academic All-Canadian, Fraser graduated with a bachelor of business administration degree. After completing bachelors in arts and education, Hayden taught history and physical education at Tatamagouche Rural High School. He married Diane in 1962 and moved to Dartmouth where he taught in junior and senior high schools.
As the department went through many changes, in name as well as in political leadership, Hayden was offered a regional representative position in the Truro area. This led to him and Dede moving their four young children to Truro where they have all made significant contributions. Son Brian said of his dad, “I have had numerous older adults approach me when they hear my last name and make the connection to my father. Every time, their stories about him have the same storyline … how he had always fought for and looked out for the little guys when it came to recreational facility funding, how he made them feel heard and important. This ties in well with his penchant for not just the rep teams, but every sporting opportunity, regardless of skill level.
In his earlier years, Barkhouse was actively officiating in the Annapolis Valley, including Acadia AUAA hockey and track and field. His unmistakably clear and booming voice in later years could also be heard announcing CEC track and field meets at the TAAC Grounds.
