Markus Jooste, the ex-CEO of Steinhoff International whose alleged financial misdeeds and subsequent resignation in 2017 wiped off $24bn of equity, equal to 8% of the country’s GDP, is a fugitive German prosecutors can’t easily lay their hands on,Under Jooste’s stewardship, Steinhoff has been criminally probed by Germany and South African prosecutors for allegedly engaging in vast and complicated misdeeds.
An avid horse racer, Jooste is the owner of South Africa’s largest horse stables. He is part of the so-called ‘Stellenbosch Mafia’, a group of highly influential white South African tycoons who reside and operate from Stellenbosch, a picturesquare, overwhelmingly White enclave in South Africa’s Cape winelands.
