Late Editor and Senior ReporterJust one female monarch now rules in the ancient royal families of Europe. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, 82, is the oldest head of state on the continent and the only current Queen, following the death of Elizabeth II.
Instead, she led her country in a minute’s silence at a special theatre event. The decision to scale back events was taken “at the Queen’s own request”, Danish media reported. On the day of Queen Elizabeth’s death, Margrethe sent her tributes and condolences in a letter to King Charles III.
