Medical association recommends specialised medical courts to probe doctors' decisions

The SA Medical Association has strongly condemned the murder charge against Professor Peter Beale, saying it had created a dangerous precedent.

Mzukwa said the association could not remain silent as doctors were subjected to trial by the media while simultaneously being denied a chance to defend themselves in court due to endless delays in the justice system. "However, his trial has dragged on unacceptably long despite a previous ruling that no further postponements would be tolerated," Mzukwa stated. In February 2022, Beale’s culpable homicide charge at the Johannesburg high court was escalated to murder after the death of one of the young patients he had operated on in 2019.
